Obituary

 Peter Berggren

Funeral service for the late Peter Berggren, whose death on Thursday morning last week at his home in Fern Prairie, was chronicled in The Post, was held Saturday from Swank’s Chapel in this city, Rev. H. J. Lane of St. John’s Presbyterian church officiating.  Commitment was in the Fern Prairie cemetery.

For more than 40 years Mr. Berggren had resided on his homestead in that district, toiling unremittingly in the building of his farm home and contributing his portion to the development of the whole community.  For his unswerving purposes and personal integrity of character, he was universally held in the highest of esteem throughout the community where his life labors were devoted.  Witness to this respect was borne out in the attendance of Fern Prairie people at the funeral service.

Possibly in striking contrast to these prosaic years on the farm, were Mr. Berggren’s earlier years.  Born in Sweden July 27 1839, he is said to have gone to sea at an early age and sailed the briny waves to about all trade marts of the world open to the sailors of those days.  Eventually he left the ship at Astoria, came here and secured a homestead.  His age was 87 years, 8 months and w7 days.  His wife died a few years ago, and there are surviving, the son, Robert, one daughter, Mrs. J. A. Johnson, and a number of grandchildren.
